wordpress-widgets Merry Christmas to all fellow WordPress users.

Here’s something to try today or over the Summer break, review your widgets and test out the new, improved interface.

Last week I looked at the main changes that WordPress 3.8 has brought but this week it is time to get down to the details.

Just click on that screenshot to see it a little larger for more detail.

Dragging is a drag on mobile devices

For as long as I can remember, when you have wanted to add a new widget to the sidebar of your site, you have had to click onto the widget in the Appearance>Widgets menu, and then drag it to the widget area such as Primary Widget Area, Footer, etc.

While that works for those of us who are whizzing around in that space daily, it did take a little getting used to.

And in this era of mobile devices, the old ‘click and drag’ method stumbles more than it works.

Enter the new click/tap-to-add method

If you want to see this new method in action, just go to Appearance> Menus and click or tap one of the widgets waiting in the central column area of your screen.

Once you have done that, a drop down list of widget areas will appear.

Click or tap the preferred widget area and then click/tap the Add Widget button.

Voila. You will have installed a WordPress widget without any drag.

Tra la la la la, la la, la, la.
