Another great video player for WordPress websites

This is the Wizard in action. Here you enter start/stop times, width/height, turn reaction on or off, and set captions/annotations.

NOTE: As of 2015, WordPress has added extra native support for video embedding and most users will be able to just paste in their YouTube links and achieve a great outcome without using plugins. We no longer use this plugin, so the embedded elements below are broken. Please visit this post instead: Embedding YouTube videos into WordPress blogsĀ Steve

Another video player for WordPress has come into my world this week, it is called Advanced YouTube Embed by Embed Plus.

What I like about this player is that is has shown itself to be stable, compatible with iOs devices, and allows you to EASILY manipulate the YouTube videos you are embedding for greater effect.

  • Video Reactions – Connect your video to discussions about it on sites other than YouTube, such as Twitter, Google+, Digg, Reddit, etc. This will not appeal to everyone but is worth exploring because it can help capture a community of comment all within your WordPress site.
  • Timed Annotations – This means you can add your notes or messages to viewers as they watch a video, even if it is not your own. Until now, only YouTube video owners could add annotations. This will help you give extra context to the video you are displaying on your site.
  • Chaptering – As it suggests, you can add chapter breaks in your video so people can skip ahead or back. It can also do what is called ‘smart social chaptering’.
  • Cropping – Sometimes you only want to show a small part of a video, cropping lets you set the start and end time of the clip, rather than risk losing your visitors if they have to sit through a few minutes of irrelevant preamble.
  • Looping – Set the video to keep looping in its entirety or just have a scene within the video replay again and again. This can be helpful if you have a page created for you to display at a stand or exhibition display, or set up in a shop window.
  • Other DVD-like controls, including slow motion.

Let’s see some of these features in action.

Using Advanced YouTube Embed

When you have installed and activated the plugin, grab the URL of a YouTube video, head over to a new Page or Post and have a play.

What you will see is a new button in your WordPress editing bar for EmbedPlus Shortcode Wizard. This is the easiest way to use this tool.

Click the wizard and enter/paste the URL (web address) of the YouTube video you want to use. NOTE: The wizard reminds you that the format for your YouTube video link must look like one of these two options: or This means you might just need to trim anything extra that sometimes appears on links to YouTube videos.

You fill in start and stop times for special features then click Get Code. This gives you some code which you paste right into your WordPress editing screen (just the Visual view, not the HTML view), and voila.

In the video below, I have selected a short clip from the middle of the video, added a chapter in the middle, and inserted two annotations (note that annotations can include links to your web page for more information, etc).

Let’s take a look.

[embedplusvideo height=”393″ width=”650″ standard=”″ vars=”ytid=FZpQlQirH5M&width=650&height=393&start=75&stop=116&rs=w&hd=0&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=0,94&notes=80%7eThis+is+as+’outdoors’+as+I+get%7c97%7eHandheld+vertical+panning+shot” id=”ep5019″ /]

While the code in my WordPress page looks a little confusing, the wizard makes it easy to create. I will repaste the code so you can see it but will replace the square brackets with standard brackets, which should render the code useless and have it behave just as text.

(embedplusvideo height=”393″ width=”650″ standard=”″ vars=”ytid=FZpQlQirH5M&width=650&height=393&start=75&stop=116&rs=w&hd=0&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=0,94&notes=80%7eThis+is+as+’outdoors’+as+I+get%7c97%7eHandheld+vertical+panning+shot” id=”ep5019″ /)

And if you want to see the whole video, I have just pasted the YouTube link into the wizard and left everything on default so that the default player will appear.

[embedplusvideo height=”281″ width=”450″ standard=”″ vars=”ytid=FZpQlQirH5M&width=450&height=281&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=0&autoplay=0&react=0&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep4327″ /]
