BPS Alert! Your site does not appear to be protectedA couple of very diligent clients who were updating their WordPress sites this week have asked me about an unexpected warning message they received (a sample pictured right).

The message is from Bulletproof Security, a favourite plugin of mine because it makes it very difficult for hackers to get in and fiddle with your website’s files on your host server.

However, this most recent update to BPS does require some manual follow up that will take about 60 seconds to complete.

If you see the message, right, then do the following 11 steps and all will be solved.

How to restore BPS Security to its protective state

  1. Click on the BPS Security tab down the bottom left of your admin screen menu
  2. Click the button called Create Default htaccess File. Click Ok on the pop up window. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  3. Click the button under it called Create Secure htaccess File. Click Ok on the pop up window. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  4. Scroll down a little to the Activate Security Modes area.
  5. In the Activate Website Root Folder .htaccess Security Mode section, click the Bulletproof Mode button and then click Activate. Then click OK on the pop up screen. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  6. Under that, in the Activate Website wp-admin Folder .htaccess Security Mode section, click the Bulletproof Mode button and then click Activate. Then click OK on the pop up screen. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  7. Under that, in the Activate Deny All htaccess Folder Protection For The BPS Master htaccess Folder section, click the Bulletproof Mode button and then click Activate. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  8. At the bottom of the page, in the Activate Deny All htaccess Folder Protection For The BPS Backup Folder section, click the Bulletproof Mode button and then click Activate. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  9. Now look towards the top of the page to a blue menu. Click Backup & Restore.
  10. In the first section under the red CAUTION note called, Backup Your Currently Active .htaccess Files, click the Backup .htaccess Files button and click Backup Files. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)
  11. Finally, skip the Restore section and scroll down to the Backup Your BPS Master .htaccess Files section, click Backup BPS Master .htaccess Files and click Backup Master Files. (Pause. The screen then refreshes.)

There you have it. All done in less than 60 seconds.

Sleep well tonight.
